Clyde Walters

Picture
Born in Hubbard Springs, VA in 1925.  Growing up on a farm, Clyde recalls having much time to "Enjoy the presence of God".  Clyde states, "I was blessed to be deposited in this rich valley just acrost from that Cumberland Gap and near'to the Dan'l Boon trail.  I saw God everyday in those beautiful mountains in the trees and flowers and all creatures great and small.  I'd drink from those springs everyday - don't think a feller can do that any more."
Clyde's parents were rooted in a deep faith in God that seems to echo through this whole region.
Clyde's faith grew when hiking alone to the sand caves in Ewing, VA.  He recounts the following:  "It took all mornin' to get up to the caves.  I'd been once before when I was much younger, but I was 17 now and had been wrestlin' with the Lord for some time. I thought that would be a good place to get some fightin' done with God.  I had'nt remembered how brilliant the different colors of sand were and it was just about like standin' in a rainbow.  Now it's hard for me to say that it was like you and me a'talkin', but it was pretty clear in my head.  I heard, "Clyde, what are you doin' piddlin' around Hubbard Springs?  You know I've been tellin' you this for a long time.  You just sit here and push your hands deep in this sand then let it fall out back to the ground.  That's your life.  That's everybody's life.  Now get goin' - where you go I don't care, but you are not needed 'round here.  You have some hurtin' to help me heal in this world."  So I packed my bags and felt called to Tennessee.  I ministered all over the Northeast region of this state until I finally settled in Maynardville in ninteen and seventy six and I've been here ever since doin' the will of the Lord."
In 2001 Clyde went to mow the lawn.  It was a humid Tennessee August day and temperatures were in the 90ºs.  Clyde says he remembers starting the mower and then hearing a voice say, "It's time for a new challenge Clyde.  You have giants to conquer just like Caleb. I want you to tell stories.  I want you to build stories from mud.  Tell my story from your work shed."  When Clyde 'came to' he was on the ground with the riding lawnmower about 20' away and his head was covered in blood.  The next day Clyde began to make "visions" out of Tennessee Red Clay and Tennessee Marble.  He calls these small mud heads with marble teeth The Great Cloud of Witnesses and it takes its reference from the Biblical scripture, Hebrews 12:1.  He also heard words in the wind and "captures" these phrases are painted on lawnmower drive belts.  The Messengers references Psalm 104:4.  Clyde's O, Death series references 1 Corinthians 15:55 and is a collection of wasp nests gathered from various structures on Clyde's property that are cut in heart shapes.  Clyde has this to say about the hearts:  "The grave has tried and tried to take a bite out of my hide, but he ain't never gonna win".
Clyde's newest body of work are yet to be titled but appear to be images of lambs and possibly reference the Book of Revelation.  These are paintings on reclaimed wood from the white picket fence that once surrounded his own sheep.
We are currently documenting Clyde's body of work and it will soon be viewable and available for purchase.
