The first thing is to realize that it really can work, and plan accordingly. That’s not easy because so many people are disdainful of coupons, and snicker at stockpiling… so you have to ignore a lot of nonsense.

Sometimes you’ll have a shelf full of fruit and no vegetables and sometimes you’ll buy all vegetables and no fruit, but eventually it will even out. You’ll always have a well-stocked pantry at low cost, and you’ll never have to run out at the list minute and pay too much for supper.

More often than you might have thought possible, when an item goes on sale, you’ll have a coupon for it. Sometimes the coupon can be doubled or tripled, and your final cost will be half or even free.

The trick, of course, is use coupons before they expire, don’t miss any sales, and know the average cost of an item, so you know whether to stock up or pass up… so you DO have to stay on top of it… but that’s not hard, and there is help available, here:

The Couponing Mom lists sales and coupons, matches them where possible, and displays them in search-able lists, according to city and store.

Even if she doesn’t list a grocery store in your city, her lists will help because you will know what to look for by just looking through her lists.

To make the plan work best, you need a good supply of coupons, and there’s an easy way to get them… join a “coupon trading” club.

There’s lots of information there about “couponing” (look in [Files]}, and lots of people to trade with.. or, if you don’t have coupons to trade, you can find just about any you want, already clipped and sorted, for a few pennies “clipping” fee (it’s illegal to actually sell them).

Hello, I am a new member following the crowd from the Salt Lake City.

I am a quiet member though. I am gleaning as much information as I can! I am the mother of 4 great children. Trystan is almost 10. Ty is 7. Gracie is 5 and the baby is Gavin he is 18 months, or will be tomorrow. I am a WAHM and also a part time student. My husband of 11 years is Ron. He is a great man! Today we got some GREAT news.

Our neighbor is getting a new freezer and lucky us, I am getting her old one. The freeze is in great shape! It is fairly new also. I am excited. Well I look forward to learning even more form this great budgeting website. Thanks, Shannon

I’m curious

I’m curious, what are the requirements for WIC? I’ve heard vaguely of it and seen it referenced on grocery store shelves.

I don’t think me and DH qualify for it right now, but my salary is going to be less than 50% of what it is right now come August (and will continue to stay that way for 5-8 years, while I finish school), so if we have kids in a year or two, we might qualify then.

Here is the link to find out the guidelines for WIC. THey really are pretty good. As soon as you get pregnant you count hte baby as a member of the family. So you would be a family of 3 and right now you can make $504. a week. Hope this helps. All the info is at the site.

Anyone want to send affordable recipes?

I also appreciate cheap recipes as we are still getting several dz a week. I boil water for ramen and quickly add eggs, beat them well and then continue making the ramen noodles. I also add veggies sometimes. My kids really like it when I scramble a bunch of eggs and make them breakfast burritos. i just add left over meat if we have it and sometimes gr. pepper, maybe cheese and or rice and roll them into flour tortillas.

These also freeze well in wax paper and then in zip lock freezer bags for quick meals. Dh likes Denver sandwiches which are 2 slices of toast with miracle whip on each slice. Mix diced bell pepper, onion and bacon. Fry this and drain oil off of it. Set aside. Beat up a bunch of eggs, add the above mixture. Put by ladelful onto a hot pan and cook. flip and the when done place on the toast with a tomato slice and serve. They are good but I leave out the onion on mine.

I am also from Miami (Florida), have one 3year old ds and 1 on the way (another boy) and also receive WIC. I try and make a quiche at least 2-3 times a month. This is great to use up WIC eggs and Cheese and any leftover items you may have, I generally use the formula Amy D describes in the Tightwad Gazzette. I make the rice crust ahe describes if I have leftover rice. (just add an egg and some cheese and form it in the pie pan and bake at 425 til firm) Now for the quiche, put about 1 cup leftover veggies in the bottom (my favorite is some spinach if I don’t have any leftover veggies to use).

Next I add any leftover meat I may have (ham, bacon etc) Now sprinkle shredded cheese all over. Now mix up 2 eggs, 2/3 cup dry milk powder and 1 cup broth along with salt and pepper. Pour this mixture over cheese and veggie mixture and bake for 45 minutes at 350. The combinations are endless. Here are other ways I got through eggs: I also use eggs in my tuna salad, make breakfast muffins often, pancakes, and breakfast burritos to freeze (scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage & cheese in a tortilla). These recipes help me save money and pay cash advances on time.

I get WIC also and do not worry about it being a bad thing. I have received WIC for 8 years now and it truly is a blessing. I feel that I pay my loans and taxes as does my husband and if the government says I am poor I will not argue. I do however try to use my vouchers so I get the best deal. If you have a store that offers buy one get one free items get your vouchers for there. They will honor this . Say cheese is on sale bogo and your voucher says 1 lb then you can get 2 lbs at no extra cost. We are getting ready to go out but I will try to think of some recipes and post them later. Chinese foods come to mind–fried rice, egg foo young, and my favorite moo shu pork! Egg drop soup. Isn’t there a lemon egg Greek soup? Quiches and souffles. Frittata’s are mostly potato/starch based but use eggs to hold them together. French toast and Monte Cristo sandwiches! (oh, that sounds really good right now…..) That egg bake-y breakfast casserole. Eggs Ranchero–you can use lots of veges and cheese to camouflage the eggs….that’s about all I can think of and now I’m hungry.
